How to read the result
- Grafts are not hairs. One graft carries one to four hairs, so a 3,000-graft session usually moves 6,000 to 7,000 hairs — this is the single most common misunderstanding in quotes.
- Coarse hair covers more scalp per graft than fine hair, which is why two people with the same Norwood stage can get very different numbers.
- If the estimate is above about 4,000, treat it as a two-session plan. Very high single-session numbers are a warning sign, not a bargain.

How many grafts do I need for a hair transplant?
It follows the pattern rather than the person: a Norwood 2 hairline is usually rebuilt with 1,200–1,800 grafts, a Norwood 3 with 1,800–2,500, a Norwood 4 with 2,500–3,500, and a Norwood 5 or 6 with 3,500–5,000 or more, often across two sessions. Hair calibre changes those numbers considerably, because coarse hair covers far more scalp per graft than fine hair. A clinic quoting you a number without having seen your donor density is quoting a package, not a plan.
What is the difference between grafts and hairs?
A graft is a follicular unit — the natural cluster in which hair grows — and it contains one to four hairs. Around 2.1 hairs per graft is a common average, so a 3,000-graft procedure typically transplants somewhere between 6,000 and 7,000 hairs. Some clinics quote in hairs precisely because the number sounds larger. When you compare two quotes, make sure both are counting the same thing, and ask for the figure in grafts.
Can I have 5,000 grafts in one day?
It is advertised, and it is rarely a good idea. Very large single sessions mean many hours out of the body for the last grafts extracted, more strain on the donor area, and a higher chance of poor survival in the grafts placed at the end. Most experienced surgeons cap a single day at roughly 3,500 to 4,000 grafts and plan a second session eight to twelve months later if more is needed. A clinic offering an unusually large session in one day is telling you something about how they price, not about what your scalp can take.
